World Kindness Day: History

The Day was originated in Tokyo in 1988 by The World Kindness Movement  Within a few years, the initiative has managed to set a globally-observed date during which, according to the tradition, at least one good action must be completed - whether it is a text message, an unexpected gesture, a politeness towards others, a helping deed, or even just a smile.

World Kindness Day is celebrated all over the world in many different and even original ways – from conferences to flash mobs, from concerts to candid cameras, by going through a series of challenges to make the highest number in kindness acts towards strangers.
It takes very little effort to be kind. Simply hold the door open for a colleague, or help your neighbour with the shopping bags, maybe even give a call to a friend from whom you haven’t hear for a while.

Kindness in the world

It really doesn’t have to be a dedicated to day, like 13^th of November, for people to be kind to one another. It’s always great to practice kindness on various occasions. 
 

In Japan, for instance, it is a common gesture of great kindness to congratulate every small event in the lives of your friends or even new acquaintance by giving small gifts. It could be for any reason, such as moving to a new place, a new job, a marriage or the birth of a child, since a small touch of kindness during a sensitive time brings in good vibes.

Another great tradition is observed in Spain. There is a place here, called The Camino de Santiago, known in English as the Way of Saint James. The place inspires pilgrimages with great gestures of kindness. Along the 800km route, it is a high possibility to meet other passers-by ready to exchange hugs, food, water and in some cases even new shoes.

Italy also makes the list with their tradition of surprise cup of coffee. It was first observed in Naples and quickly spread throughout the country. The idea behind the gesture is to pay extra for your coffee so that the next customer, who possibly cannot afford it or maybe has a companion for a break, can get a surprise cup of free coffee.

World Kindness Day: the lists

Lists with 100 small gestures to be made during World Kindness Day are widespread in the United States. Here are some ideas to take inspiration from:
 

1. Leave some money in the coffee machine;
2. Donate money or anything you find useful to a good cause;
3. Clean up the park or beach from rubbish;

4. Let somebody else ahead in the queue, when they need it;
5. Make a compliment to a stranger;
6. Pay the cinema tickets for someone at the box office;
7. Give flowers to passers-by;
8. Leave a positive message on someone's car;
9. Prepare a cake for the neighbors;
10. Thank a colleague with a small gift.
